What is a patch list and why does every AV setup need one?

A patch list (also called a patch sheet or cable schedule) is a document that records every signal connection in an audio/video system. It describes which output on one device connects to which input on another, and what type of cable or signal is used. In broadcast, live events, and installed AV, a patch list is essential for troubleshooting, setup, and hand-off between crew members.

Built for broadcast and live event engineers

This free signal flow documentation tool supports the connection types that AV professionals use daily: HDMI, SDI, XLR, TRS, USB, Ethernet, DisplayPort, Optical/TOSLINK, BNC, RCA, Dante, and NDI. Each connection is colour-coded so you can scan the list quickly.

How to use the patch list tool

  • Add connections — enter the source device and output, destination device and input, and select the cable type.
  • Filter by type — focus on just HDMI runs, or just audio connections, etc.
  • Verify connections — check off each patch as you confirm it is wired correctly.
  • Add notes — record cable lengths, labels, or special instructions.

When to use a patch list

Patch lists are invaluable for live events, broadcast studios, houses of worship, corporate AV, and touring productions. They help new crew members understand the system quickly and make troubleshooting much faster when something goes wrong.
